Safety Second
We've had our first adventure! Last night just as we were getting to Kamloops (because Highway 1 was closed) the engine light went on. I had just had the truck in the shop on Friday getting a check up so I was a little confused.
As I filled up with gas I checked the oil and the dipstick was dry. I added a liter and it was still dry... And then I added 3.5 more before the oil was where it should be!
Apparently the shop didn't add oil, and we made it all the way to Kamloops on almost none!
I called a mechanic friend and he told me that this is really not good and a bit amazing that we had made it at all.
Obviously that's not ideal, but in the midst of this we saw the imprint of Jesus' fingerprints all over the place!
1) The engine light went on just before Kamloops which was amazing timing. From Valemount to Kamloops its all forest, and then after Kamloops we were on the Coquihalla with nowhere to stop. If we had a little less oil or a little more we would have been cooked... Literally!
2) I have a good mechanic friend who was able to receive a worries phonecall. Praise the Lord for friends who know things :)
3) As I was filling up with oil in Kamloops a guy named Jeremiah asked if we were okay. I told him about how Jesus was talking care of us and he gave glory to God and offered to come get us if we broke down on the Coquihalla. The offer set our minds at ease so we knew we could make it to Hope where we spent the night. Praise the Lord!
4) And... Just before the engine light turned on we had been talking with our kids about how we train ourselves to pay attention to God showing up in our lives and we asked them if they had a testimony like this. Our boys protested that they hadn't experienced God in this way.
After this all the kids were expressing amazement about how Jesus was running along beside us adding just enough oil to keep us going just far enough to make it. Praise the Lord!
So all this said, while I like safety as much as the next guy, I'm not interested in safety first, I'll take it second. What I'm really hungry for is to see Jesus at work. So please pray for this as we head out. We've been reminded that Jesus loves us and is working all things out for the increase of His glory and our good. And that's where our trust lies - not in safety, but in His hands.
Tonight my family gets on the plane at midnight and arrive in Guatemala city at noon tomorrow.
